Senior Research Infrastructure Systems Administrator

UCL Bloomsbury Campus, London

UCL are looking for an experienced Senior Research Data Storage Technologist to join their outstanding team based at the Bloomsbury Campus in London. Starting asap and paying a competitive salary, you will be based in the Research Infrastructure Services (RIS) team, part of the Research IT Services Department.

You’ll have an understanding of High Performance Computing and the particular technical issues it involves to be able to support and maintain all systems.

Some of your main responsibilities will include:
• Providing technical leadership, support and cover to members of the team
• Taking a technical lead, and all duties this involves, on projects
• Working with the ISD Architecture Group on high-level design plans and principles
• Assisting in ensuring all service delivery targets are met
• Developing and using appropriate tools to control and monitor service and hardware status
• Developing tools to keep inventory and increase efficient use of available hardware platforms across projects
• Working with external engineers to improve service delivery
• Providing operational support
• Monitoring new technologies and developments

You must have a relevant degree or equivalent professional experience in computing science, I.T., engineering or similar. You’ll have experience working with HPC Clusters including Cluster Networks such as Mellanox or OmniPath and have good knowledge of Linux and building/compiling software from source.

You’ll also need experience:
• Of technology solutions and vendors in large-scale HPC landscapes
• As a technical lead, project lead or virtual lead in an IT environment
• Experience of providing Systems Administration on Linux operating systems, ideally Linux Redhat
• Installing and deploying software using Kickstart and Puppet/Chef
• Writing shell scripts or small utility programs, such as Python, Ruby, PERL, C, Powershell or Visual Basic

The following experience will also be beneficial but not essential:
• Use of HPC storage technologies such as Lustre or GPFS
• Software development in major and current programming languages
• Research needs in an academic environment
• Database management
