Information Governance Officer

A local government client has an exciting opportunity for an Information Governance Officer to join their growing department.

You will be joining them at an exciting transition period as they relocate to a new Centre and embrace agile ways of working with improvements to customer service at the forefront of everything they do. They are also building a new Greenfield Data Centre to help create new shared services across London.

You will become part of the growing Information Governance Team and play a pivotal role in ensuring changes within our IT systems meet the needs of residents, stakeholders and internal users. You will have a key part in redesigning ways of working to improve services, ICT and efficiencies within the new structure of the organisation and help ensure a culture of continuous improvement.

As the Information Governance Officer you and the team will manage all the Council’s compliance with legislative and regulatory frameworks governing the access to, handling, classification, retention, sharing and disposal of information, reporting into the Information Governance Manager.

You will provide expert advice and guidance on all aspects of Information Governance, ensuring that Information Governance policies are correctly interpreted throughout the organisation and to promote good information management and data handling practises across the Council.

You will be there to ensure that suitable information governance awareness and training programmes are in place across the organisation and undertake reviews and monitor compliance across the authority to manage the regulatory compliance and relationship with the ICO.

What are the key responsibilities?

• Support the organisation in developing, managing, maintaining and reviewing good information management and data handling practices across the Council to ensure compliance with:
- The Data Protection Act 1998;
- The Freedom of Information Act 2000;
- Records management and other requirements/good practice relating to information governance.
- With your experience you will have researched and know the principals and of GDPR.
• You will be accountable for developing the corporate approach for information governance including the implementation of corporate information and records management policies, procedures and guidance that will support the organisation in meeting its statutory obligations and promote good practice across all departments to improve business and operational efficiency.
• You will work closely with the ICT Security Manager and information asset owners to ensure a coordinated approach to information governance in all areas of risk, data quality and change ensuring that privacy impact assessments are complete and reviewed.
• Provide specialist advice and training to Members, senior officers and staff across the organisation on issues relating to all aspects of Information Governance.
• Regularly review the Council’s information governance policies and procedures and ensure these are communicated effectively to staff at all levels, relevant service providers and elected members.

What are the key skills/experience required?

• Able to motivate others in order to be able to focus on delivery within competing deadlines;
• Being able to explain complex technical issues in a simple to understand way at all levels of the organisation
• Ability to challenge established practice and provide workable solutions which protect the Council’s interests.
• Able to creatively rethink solutions where time pressures or cost restrictions means that a change in scope is required.
